In a letter addressed to Scotland’s First Minister, Humza Yousaf, Sarah Rayan, Advocacy and Policy Officer, raised concerns about his past statements and positions regarding homosexuality and its compatibility with Islam. In the letter, Rayan emphasized the importance of upholding and promoting accurate information and understanding of Islam and its teachings, particularly for leaders and public figures.
Rayan highlighted that in Islam, homosexuality is considered a grave sin and strictly prohibited under Islamic law. The Quran and the Hadith, which are the primary sources of Islamic jurisprudence, clearly condemn homosexuality as a deviation from the natural order and a violation of the divine will. Therefore, Rayan urged Yousaf to publicly affirm this position and make it clear that there is no room for ambiguity regarding this issue.
The letter further stated that if Yousaf does not support this position, he should refrain from identifying himself as a Muslim. Alternatively, he should provide a clear and unequivocal statement that homosexuality is incompatible with Islam and considered a sin under Islamic law. Additionally, Rayan urged Yousaf to express regret for any misinformation or confusion he may have propagated in the past on this issue.
Rayan acknowledged that these are complex and sensitive issues, but emphasized that it is Yousaf’s responsibility as a leader to promote accurate and respectful dialogue about Islam and its teachings. The letter concluded by urging Yousaf to take the message seriously and consider the impact of his words and actions on the communities he serves.
